that awesome moment when.....
Dear Americans,
You should know that although you are annoyed with television ads and bilboards about the upcoming elections, i am getting just as much coverage hundreds of thousands of miles away. Everyone and their dog wants to know who my parents are voting for, who i would vote for and what i think about mitch hom-nee. (how his name is pronounced). When i say anything positive about Mitt Romney I am met with lots of exasperated sighs and anger because the brasillians, they like Mr. Obama. Mostly because he is black.
I am also getting lots and lots of ``oh my goodness did you know about the hurricane?!!`` And when I say no, I have no idea about Hurricane Sandy they are completely overwhelmed and take it upon themselves to tell me every detail. Brasillians. they like drama. I am coming to find out very quickly here.
Other than the excitement of America, this week has flown by (like normal) and I dont have lots of actual stories for you. So instead, I will leave you with a few one lined awesome moments that occured this past week-
Every one of these moments i want to say ``awesome`` after i read it. Just picture me saying that okay?
1. you find out that Carlos´ house is just a mere rocks throw from the favela mafia leaders home. And yes, i know the leader of the gangs here in the favela.
2. An Irma in the Elder´s ward lives right next door to you and she brings over lots of pão (i am going to get real fat here)
3. The door to our house jammed itself, and when we called the Elders they told us to just ``break down the door, sleep with no door all night and then buy a new one tomorrow``. Ha. Oh Elders. Instead we called a key man which resulted in us sitting on the side of the road (think downtown) until about 11:30pm.
4. Your one progressing investigator gets paid a visit from an anti-mormon, and he fills her head with EVERYTHING anti-mormon. And she has a weak moment of doubt, and then ends up going to church yesterday, and told us last night she wants to get baptized on Sunday (along with her daughters-sa-weet!)
5. An Elder comments on the hair on your legs.....yes. thank you elder.
6. The Mafia calls you ``Jesus people`` and dosent mess with you.
7. It was pouring rain and i forgot my jacket, so an investigator made a poncho for me out of trash bags.
8. We have an investigator named Louis Lane. Like Superman.
9. The super stellar watch tan line i am getting
10. An investigator found me on facebook just by my last name.
11. I smashed a mosquito with my own hands and blood came out of it. It was most likely my blood since well, mine is the only blood they like.
12. the word ``saci`` (saucy) which means one legged gobblin
13. an Investigator told me my red nail polish was what prostitutes use here in brasil. So instead she painted my nails black. (go figure).
14. I ate pineapple without making ONE FACE.
15. Finding a subway subs restaurant that sells overbaked, but REAL cookies.
16. the color of ducks here
17. My friend Maria, she is 97 years old and totally sane.
18. the lizards that crawl up the walls of everything
19. Maybe i am new here in Brasil, but there is a man whos job is to `´guard the streets`` on Rua Garret and his name is what sounds to me like Voldemort. Doesnt that just make you want to do an air punch?
20. ``The Hunger Games`` look the mafia has her ein the favela. This kid is 15 and he is part of the gangs here. I know him pretty well actually and make fun of his eyebrows everytime i see him. Which in turn, he makes fun of my accent.

p.s. daniel update-oh my goodness you would not believe it but guess what? Daniel, our friend we met last week was actually João, Another less active that i have been looking for. They are cousins and he thought I was looking for him until I said Daniel. We met back up with him this past week, and João introduced me to the real Daniel, who is quite short (doesnt fit the character i was looking for) but told me the same thing, they made the wrong friends after the mission...and by wrong friends, i mean they are mixed up in the gangs. We planned on meeting back up with them later this past week but friday was day of the dead and a few shootings happened on their street so we couldnt go back in. The plus on the whole thing? Daniel will be coming with us to knock doors this next week.
